본 연구의 목적은 백년이 지난 지금까지도 전 세계 어린이들에게 사랑받고 있는 베아트릭스포터 작품 속 등장인물(주인공, 지지자, 대립자)들의 유형과 갈등 관계를 살펴보는 것이다. 분석대상은 베아트릭스 포터의 작품 23권 중 주요 등장인물이 나타나지 않은 자장가 그림책 2권과그림책으로 분류하기 어려운 꼬마 돼지 로빈슨 이야기 1권을 제외한 나머지 20권으로 선정하였다. 평가 준거는 선행연구들을 참고하여, 연구자들이 수정·보완하였다. 그 결과 그림책에 나타난주인공의 유형은 원-탑(One-hero), 투-탑(Two-heroes) 주인공의 유형이 비슷하게 그려졌고, 연령은 장년층이, 성별은 남성이 많이 등장하였다. 지지자 유무의 빈도는 동일하였으며, 대립자는빈번하게 나타났다. 주인공의 갈등은 대다수 그림책에서 그려졌으며, 대상은 이웃과의 갈등에서많이 다뤄졌다. 이러한 연구 결과는 베아트릭스 포터 그림책에 나타난 작가의 아동관, 교육관과시대상을 고찰해 볼 수 있게 하고, 그림책 교육 방향의 재점검과 그림책 창작에서 다양한 등장인물의 필요성에도 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다.
This study analyzed the types of characters and conflicting relationship portrayed in Beatrix Potter’s picture books which have held a reputation as one of the world’s best-selling and best-loved children’s picture books for over 100 years For this purpose 20 Beatrix Potter’s picture books translated in Korean were collected. Results of character analysis showed that 1) one-top and two-top character type are similarly drawn. 2) males appear much more frequently than females. 3) adults appear much more frequently than children. 4) the opponents appear much more frequently than the supporters. 5) conflicts among characters are drawn in almost every Potter books. The results of this study would suggest to reconsider the practice of picture book reading in which the freedom to interpret the picture book text is apt to be given to young readers in early childhood education settings.
