『東醫寶鑑』이 儒學과 道敎를 하나의 의학적 구조 안에서 전개하고자 한 것은 金元代 이후 儒醫라고 불리는 인물들에게 그 사상적 연원이 있다. 儒醫들의 저술을 통해 『東醫寶鑑』은 유학적 경향성을 나타내었는데, 『東醫寶鑑』에서는 生理와 病理 그리고 心理를 통합하는 방향으로 이해하고자 한 것이다. 우선 養性의 부분에서는 存心養性이라는 儒家적 이상을 의학적으로 실현하고자 하는 儒醫 의학의 목적이 『東醫寶鑑』에 드러나 있다. 이는 靜坐수행 등 主靜의 관점이나 節欲이라는 심성 수양이 의학이론에서 투영되어 나타났으며 이러한 부분은 情志의 中節이라는 이상적 상태를 상정하기도 한다. 즉 과도한 七情·五志가 心神뿐 아니라 생명을 파괴하는데 까지 이를 수 있음을 말한 것으로 정서적 안정과 心理의 中節이 무엇보다 중요하다고 하였다. 그리고 妄動을 조절하는 방법으로 主靜과 滋陰降火라는 心理·생리적 治法을 제시한 것은 動靜을 일관하는 구조 속에서 中和를 이루려는 노력으로 보인다. 이는 『易』 「彖傳」에서 언급된 '各正性命'과 '保合大和'의 측면에서 본다면 心性에 대한 논의는 '各正性命'이라고 본다면 앞서의 形氣·形質의 中和에 대한 논의는 '保合大和'의 측면이고, 또한 存心養性의 의미는 '各正性命'이라고 본다면 '省察'인 相火의 中節은 '保合大和'와 통하는 중층적인 구조를 지니고 있다. 이는 養身과 養心을 動靜의 관계로 보는 것과도 상통하는 것이다. 아울러 情志가 생리적인 변화를 촉발하고 陰陽失調라는 病理로 이어지는 것으로 본 『東醫寶鑑』의 입장은 生理·心理가 性情의 中和를 매개로 하여 一元적인 체계를 갖추고 있음을 보여주는 대목이다.
