Based on Neighborhood Unit Principle, this study aims at deriving a model of senior-friendly residence and exploring the planning direction for senior-friendly residence through a process of applying it to residential areas to be researched. As the result of the exploration of the principle, it was clarified that in the cases of Korean residences, Neighborhood Unit Principle began to be applied first to Jamsil-dong in the 1970s. It was also confirmed that Jamsildong was an area where its original form was being preserved till the present. Therefore, Jamsil-dong was selected as a research area of this study. Perry’s Neighborhood Unit Principle is the theory planned with its main target, that is, primary school. Thus, by considering that the main target of senior-friendly residence was the elderly, this study derived a model of senior-friendly residence based on the result of previous study. Consequently, it appeared that the radius of the neighborhood unit in senior-friendly residence was smaller than that suggested by the principle. Also, it appeared that the main facility, which was primary school, should possess the operating system that would be able to provide medical service. As the result of the application of the model of senior-friendly residence, which was eventually derived, to the case of the neighborhood unit in Jamsil 2-dong, it appeared that all the radius, highways, public facility, neighborhood shop, and internal road were appropriate for the factors suggested by the model of senior-friendly residence focusing on radius & center facility of neighborhood unit. But, it appeared that the area of primary school, which was the main facility, as well as the service provided to the elderly were not appropriate. Through its process, the study can be expected to function as a fundamental data for planning senior-friendly residence in the future.
