宋書의 문장은 아름답고 유창하며 언어는 간결하고 문채에 치중하여 그 시대적 특색이 잘 나타나 있다. 인물을 표현한 언어든 서사에 쓰여 진 언어를 막론하고 모두 다 큰 성과를 이루었다. 六朝는 章句를 조탁하고 형식과 기교의 아름다움을 추구하여 騈文이 극성하던 시기이다, 이러한 풍조는 史书의 창작에 까지 영향을 끼쳤는데。그중 宋书에 나타난 언어가 이 시기 변문언어에 있어서 가장 대표적인 것이다. 沈约 스스로가 音律에 뛰어나기 때문에 史论역시 성운의 아름다움을 갖추었다.
Most kind of character in Song-Shu had his own personality, and the type of character was rich and colorful in Song-shu. Although clues of events were quite tanglesome, some long biographies were rather elegant to organize the stories of characters and structure of narration, and clues of narration of these long biographies were clear and fluent.
