The following results were found by analyzing “白+BB” type words shown in the corpus data and current dictionary descriptions. Most 白+BB type words are made up of a common component, “白(Bai)” and a diagnostic component, “BB” The diagnostic component represents brightness, sharpness, volume, form, or emotion, and in accordance with the particular diagnostic component, the object described using the 白+BB type word differs. An analysis of relevant data shows that the current dictionary treatment of 白+BB type words is not proportional to usage of these words as seen in the corpus. Furthermore, “白花花” and “白茫茫” appear in the corpus data with enough frequency to suggest that 白+BB type words are actively used in modern Chinese. The corpus data analysis also shows that the objects described by 白+BB type words are mostly snow, rain, and fog, followed by natural or artificial space, money, etc. This provides us an insight into the common usage trends in modern Chinese language.
