이 논문의 목적은 크게 두 가지이다. 그 하나는 소설을 통한 ‘근대성’의 본질 천착에 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 한국의 대표적 작가들 중 하나로 손꼽히고 있는 이 문열의 소설 「雅歌」 속에서의 ‘근대성’ 읽기이다. 그의 소설에 나타난 ‘근대성’(modern -ity)에 초점을 맞추고, 그것과 ‘근대성’ 문제에 천착했던 기존 사회학의 대가들의 ‘근대성’에 대한 이해를 접목시킴으로써 소설 「雅歌」에 나타나는 ‘사회세계’ 변천―이른바, ‘사회변동’―에 대한 사회학적 함의를 분석하는 것이다. 나머지 하나는, 이런 기획을 통해 사회학에서 핵심적 탐구의 주제로 간주되는 ‘근대성’ 문제에 대한 보다 포괄적인 이해를 도모하는 데 있다. 이를 위해, 이 논문은 중증장애인으로 그려진 소설 속 주인공 ‘당편’에 초점을 맞춤으로써 논문을 위한 두 가지 준거틀(framework)을 전략적으로 확보하게 된다. 그 하나는 그녀를 둘러싼 주위의 ‘사회적 환경’이고, 다른 하나는 그녀를 대표로 하는 ‘사회적 행위자’의 준거틀이다. 이 논문은 먼저 독자들을 위해, 간단한 소설의 줄거리를 요약, 소개하고, 다음으로 소설 속 ‘근대성’의 사회학적 함의를 본격적으로 추적한다. 크게 보아, 첫째로 ‘사회세계가 사회 성원들에게 구체성을 띠고 있는 것으로 경험되는가?’ 아니면, ‘추상적으로 경험되는가?’의 잣대를 가지고 소설 속 ‘근대성’의 문제에 접근하고 있다. 둘째로, 세계 속 인간들의 사회적 관계의 측면에서 어떤 변이가 일어났는가를 ‘간섭적 염려’와 ‘시민적 무관심’이라는 개념으로 천착하고 있다. 마지막으로, 그런 변동일로에 있는 제반 사회적 조건은 과연 인간들에겐 어떤 의미가 있는 것인가를 ‘전락’의 조건과 ‘또 다른 가능성’의 조건이라는 측면에서 작가가 은연중 소설 속에서 보이는 자신의 견해에 대해 평형감각을 지니고 접근하고 있다.
Munyol Yi is regarded as one of Korea's most prolific and popular writers of contemporary literature. Yi is distinguished for his keen observations, and depicts his view in his numerous works of fiction. His viewpoints as reflected in his novels, has had a significant influence in our understanding of modern Korean society. This essay is an analysis of one of Yi's novels, Song of Songs, and its impact on our understanding of Korean society. The main focus of this analysis is the novel's depiction of modernity, and the influence it has had on our society. This paper examines the novel's contribution to our comprehensive understanding of modernity, considered to be one of the critical issues in the studies of social sciences. This paper will scrutinize the work in two frameworks, centered around the protagonist of the novel, Dang-Pyun, who is mentally and physically handicapped：Firstly, this essay examines the social milieu of Dang-Pyun's life. Secondly, it investigates the agency of the social context. In short, this paper explores the manner in which the society adapts to rapid changes of today's social world, and men's (or, agency's) difficulty in coping with social turmoil.
