Recent advances in new information and communication technologies (ICTs) and corresponding organizational changes within firms have substantial consequences on the labor market. Using various firm-level and individual-level data sets, this paper aims to identify these consequences in OECD countries (in particular EU member countries) and to propose the importance of promoting workers' continuing education and training (CET). First, ICTs and so-called "new workplace practices" appear to be complementary in the sense that firms can take full advantage of this development only by adopting both at the same time. Second, these changes tend to strengthen demands for skilled workers and employment instabilities. Third, CET appears to play a positive role in reinforcing workers' employability and improving their productivity measured as their real wage rate. Finally, the paper presents various policy measures which are currently put in place in OECD member countries for the purpose of activating CET programmes for adult workers.
