현실생활에서 자신의 도덕 본심을 발현하여 도덕 가치를 성취함, 곧 이상인격을 확립하는 것이 송명이학가의 공통적인 목표이자 임무라 하겠다. 송명이학자는 비록 이상인격 완성이라는 공통된 목표가 있었음에도 불구하고, 어떠한 방법을 통하여 이러한 이상인격을 확립하느냐 하는 공부론에 있어서 理學과 心學은 각기 다른 방법을 제시하고 있음을 알 수 있으니, 이러한 차이는 바로 대학의 공부론에 대한 서로 다른 해석을 둘러싸고 일어난 것이다. 이러한 대학의 공부방법에 대한 해석을 둘러싸고 당시의 학자들은 각자의 독특한 견해를 피력하기에 이르렀으니, 그 중에서도 이들이 중점적으로 논란의 대상으로 삼고 있었던 것은 ‘正心誠意致知格物’이라는 네 가지 항목이다.이 글에서는 그 중 주희육구연왕수인유종주의 공부론을 대학의 ‘正心誠意致知格物’을 중심으로 살펴보기로 한다. 그들은 모두 ‘吾心과 天理가 혼연히 합일된 경지’인 성인의 경계를 추구한다는 동일한 목적의식을 가지고 출발했음에도 불구하고, 이러한 성인의 경계를 추구하는 구체적인 공부방법에 있어서 서로 차이를 보이고 있다. 이를 대체적으로 말하자면, 주희는 격물 중심, 육구연은 정심 중심, 왕수인은 치지 중심, 유종주는 성의 중심의 공부론을 각각 주장한다. 이러한 격물에서 정심으로, 정심에서 치지로, 치지에서 성의로의 변화과정은 공부론의 내재화 과정을 보여주고 있는 것이라 할 수 있겠다.
