본 연구는 초기 인증사회적기업의 형성 및 성장과정을 자원의존이론과 신제도주의 관점에서 이해하고자 하였다. 즉 제도적 지원이 초기 인증사회적기업의 형성과정과 성장과정에서 어떠한 역할을 하는지 또한 제도적동형화는 형성과정과 성장과정에서 어떤 식으로 나타나는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 연구방법은 질적연구방법 중에서 조직연구에 많이 사용되는 사례연구로 정한 후, 참여 사회적기업과 연구참여자를 선정하였다. 본 연구에서는 사회적기업육성법이 시행된 후 인증 받은 사회적기업 중에서 2007년, 2008년에 인증 받은 사회적기업 6개를 대상으로 심층면접을 실시한 결과, 한국사회적기업은 형성과정에서 제도적 지원을 선인지하였고 성장과정에서는 이러한 지원은 유용했다고 진술하였다. 이를 통해 제도적 지원이라는 정부정책에 의한 강압적동형화를 확인할 수 있었으며, 형성과정은 지역과 동종업종의 분위기를 통해 모방적동형화를, 성장과정에서는 닮아가기를 통해 모방적동형화를 확인하였다. 규범적동형화는 특정지역과 특정업종에서만 확인되었다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 분석결과를 통해 몇 가지 정책적 과제와 제한점을 제시하였다.
