이 글은 경학 연구의 새로운 방법과 시각을 제시하는 데에 논의의 초점을 두고 작성되었다. 그동안 우리나라에서의 경학연구가 주로 ‘경세지학’, 즉 소위 말하는 ‘철학’ 영역에서 많은 성과를 이루어낸 것만큼은 사실이다. 그러나 경학의 한 분야라 말할 수 있는 ‘경전해석학’ 측면의 연구 활동은 그다지 왕성하지 못했다. 따라서 필자는 경학연구의 미개척 분야인 ‘경전해석학’ 쪽에 관심을 가지게 되었는데, 그 관심 대상의 텍스트는 『논어』이다. 『논어』는 대화체 고문으로서 다양한 해석이 등장할 수밖에 없는 필연성을 가진 四書 가운데 하나다. 그리고 우리나라는 이 『논어』에 관한한 주희의 해석에만 늘 천착하여 왔다. 그러나 『논어』 해석에 대한 정답이 주희의 풀이와 관점만 될 수 있는 것이 아님을 밝히는 데에 이 글의 주목적이 있다. 따라서 주희의 해석을 기준으로 하되, 주희 이전의 중국 한당시대의 『논어』 주석들을 조사하면서, 『논어』 해석의 다양성과 그로부터 나타나는 다양한 해석학적 관점들을 연구해 보았다. 이는 『논어』 속의 주인공인 공자와 그의 제자들에 대한 인물들에 대한 평가에서도 새로운 시각으로 바라볼 수 있는 계기를 마련하게 되었다. 끝으로 이 글이 경전에 대한 해석학적 관점과 다양한 지평을 열어가기를 희망하는 후학들에게 조금이나마 도움이 될 수 있기를 바란다.
This thesis has been written to offer a new method and viewpoint of the study on the Confucian classics. There is no denying the fact that till now the studies on the Confucian classics in South Korea have obtained many good results mainly in the field of the study of adminstration, or at least in the domain of philosophy. However, the research activities for analytical understanding of Confucian classics, one of the fields of the study on Confucian classics, have been not so energetic. So I became interested in the undeveloped field of study on Confucian classics and that's why I choose the text of the Analects of Confucius as the subject of my study. As an ancient classic written in dialogue, the Analects of Confucius which is one of the Four Books can be analyzed diversely by necessity. But, up to the present, Korean researchers have digged into just the annotations of Chu Hsi on the text. So I have written this thesis with the view of saying that it's not the only key to the analysis of the Analects of Confucius to rely on Chu Hsi's explanation and viewpoint. For this reason, on the basis of not only Chu Hsi's analysis, but also other old annotations of the Analects of Confucius, especially of Chinese Han and Tang dynasty, I have studied the different analytical viewpoints of the text. I think this thesis would provide a momentum for judging Confucius and his students, the main characters of 『the Analects of Confucius』 by new sight. In conclusion, it is to be desired that this writing will be any service to younger students who want to break new ground in the analytical understanding of Confucian scriptures.
