포스트모더니즘 또는 탈근대와 관련된 중국철학에 대한 논의는 서구적 ‘근대성’의 핵심을 어떻게 이해하느냐와 밀접한 연관성을 지니고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 서구의 근대성에 대한 담론을 우선적으로 살피고 중국철학 연구자들이 특히 핵심적으로 이해했던 서구적 근대성을 ‘초월성’이란 개념을 통해 살펴보았다. 이러한 초월성에 대한 논의가 탈근대적 담론에서 완전히 전도된 형태로 전개됨을 우리는 목도할 수 있는데 이러한 상황에서 중국철학 연구의 방향은 무엇이어야 할지에 대한 진지한 고민이 필요하다. 담론의 유행에 손쉽게 투항하지 않지만 또 한편으로는 시대상황을 예민하게 파악하면서 자신의 주체적인 문제의식을 쌓아가는 것 이외의 다른 대안은 없는 듯이 보인다.
The discussion about Chinese philosophy in terms of postmodernism hinges on the discussant's understanding of western 'modernity.' This paper, thus, first explore the discourse surrounding the issue of modernity, and proceeds to examine the notion of 'transcendence' that researchers in the field of classical Chinese philosophy takes to be one of the core concepts of western modernity. Ironically, a postmodern approach to classical Chinese philosophy has a tendency to emphasize the lack of 'transcendence' in Chinese philosophy in a very positive manner. Seen from this vintage point of view, it is all the more crucial whether a Chinese philosophy specialist has developed a keen sense of contemporary issues as well as his or her own problematic if he or she ever achieved a balanced and mature scholarship.
