제사는 동서고금의 어느 사회에서나 형태만 다를 뿐 지속적으로 행해지고 있다. 현재 우리나라에서 제례에 대한 일반적 개념은 조상신에 대한 의례를 뜻하는데, 주자학과 함께 우리나라에 도입된 조상제사는 오늘날까지 많은 변화를 겪어오면서 바람직한 계승방안 등이 끊임없이 논의되고 있는 실정이다. 이 가운데 본 논문이 말하고자 하는 핵심은 첫째, ‘조상제사를 지내야만 하는 근원적인 이유는 무엇인가?’ 둘째, ‘조상제사는 오늘날을 사는 우리에게 어떤 의미를 던지는가?’ 두 가지에 있다. 경전에서 나타나는 제사의 근원적인 목적은 ‘報本反始’에 있다. 유교에서 제사의 목적은 일차적으로 생명의 근원에 대한 감사와 보답에 있는 것이며, 제사의 목표는 생명의 근원인 ‘신’과 일치를 이루는 것이라 할 수 있다. 모든 제사의 절차에는 인간이 신을 맞이하는 迎神의 의례로부터 시작하여 신을 전송하는 送神의 의례를 행함으로써 제사를 마치는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 제사의 과정을 통해 인간은 신과 감통하고 교류하는 종교적 경험을 드러내고 있는 것이다. 오늘날 무한 경쟁체제로 긴장의 연속이다. 긴장을 푸는 것에는 많은 방법이 있겠지만 가장 기본적인 것은 긴장하지 않아도 될 사람을 만나는 것이다. 그러한 사람이 바로 부모이며, 부모를 만나는 것은 생기를 충천할 수 있는 기회가 된다. 그러나 부모님이 돌아가시면 생기를 충전할 기회가 없다. 그러므로 부모의 사랑을 다시 느끼기 위해서는 계기를 만들어야 하는데, 부모와 만나는 방법을 찾은 것이 제사인 것이다. 부모를 만나 생전처럼 부모의 사랑을 듬뿍 느끼는 것, 그것이 제사를 지내는 가장 중요한 의미이다. 다음으로 제사는 화합의 기회이다. 사람들이 다투는 까닭은 우리는 모두 하나라는 것을 망각하여 잘 모르는 사람은 물론 동료나 친구와도 다투고 끝내는 형제끼리도 다투게 되는 것이다. 이럴 때 형제가 부모의 제사를 함께 잘 지내면 부모를 통해서 서로 하나라는 것이 확인된다. 하나를 확인하게 되는 순간 형제는 화합할 수 있다. 내가 나온 곳이 부모님의 몸임을 확인하는 순간 부모님의 몸 역시 나와 한 몸이라는 것을 알게 된다. 이 나라의 국민들 모두가 가족과 같은 하나의 마음이 되면 대통령은 우리의 부모와 같고 국민은 나의 자녀와 같이 소중하다. 그 마음으로 정치를 하게 되면 나라를 다스리는 것이 순조로워질 것이다. 오늘날 정치의 수장들이 깊이 되새겨야 할 부분이라고 여겨진다. 제사의 형식을 올바로 이해하는 것도 중요하지만 보다 우선시 되어야 할 것은 제사를 지내는 본래적 근본정신을 파악하여 우리가 살아가는 실생활에 원용하면서 과거에 대한 집착보다는 미래의 방향까지 모색해야 할 것이다.

Ancestral rites is consistently being done in any society in the form of all ages, but it just has the different form. Currently, general concepts of Ancestral ritual formalities in our country means a ritual to the ancestral spirits, Ancestral rites that was introduced with the doctrines of Chu-tzu(朱子學) is a situation to be consistently discussed with preferred succession plans having been undergone many changes up to this day. Among them, the core of this paper to say is first, ‘What is the underlying reason that only performs Ancestral rites?’, Second, ‘What does Ancestral rites mean to us living today?’ The underlying purpose of the sacrifices that appears in the scriptures is to Bao-ben-fan-shi(報本反始). To bring back to the past and reciprocate for the origin is rewarding to favor of ancestors, that is to say the role of propriety. A ritual is eventually the social and cultural mechanism to look back into where I came from. Thus the purpose of sacrifice in the Confucianism is primarily in the gratitude and reward for the origin of life, the goal of Ancestral rites can be said to achieve unity with ‘spirit’ that is the root of life. Procedures of all sacrifices show that completing the sacrifices by performing a ritual that humans start from the rite of Ying-shen(迎神) meeting the spirit and hold the rite of Song-shen(送神) seeing it off. Through the course of these sacrifices, humans reveal the religious experience that goes through feel and interacts with spirit. Today, our life is a continuation of stress in free-for-all system. Even if there are a number of ways to relax, the most basic one is to meet people who would not be nervous. Such a man is a parent, seeing parents is an opportunity to charge the animation. However, if they pass away, there are no more chances to recharge a livelihood. Therefore, the opportunity has to be created in order to feel the love of parents again, Ancestral rites is a way to meet the parents. To feel the love of parents a lot like a lifetime meeting them, it is the most important means of offering sacrifices. Next, Ancestral rites is an opportunity for unity. The reason that people are arguing is because they are forgetting what we are all one, quarreling with colleagues or friends as well as we an uncertain person and finally arguing with brothers. When this happens, if brothers hold a memorial service for their parents well, what they are one and the same is confirmed by their parents. When it comes down to the moment that is the one, the brothers can live in union. In particular, today there are many families living scattered all over, even if they would like to meet in one place, it is not easy to fix a date. In such a case, they set a date when they can meet everyone at least once a year, the best date might be the anniversary of death. When it comes to the moment to verify the fact that I came from the body of my parents, it turns out to be the truth my parents and I are also in one body. If the scope is widened to not only brothers also cousins, second cousins and third cousins as the opportunity to becomes one with parents, it can be known as all existing things of the world are not different from me. When all the people of the country is one of the mind such as the family, the president is same as our parents and people is valuable such as my children. When the government ruled the country with that in mind, it is downhill all the way to govern a country. It is considered the section that the head of politics deeply has to ruminate today. It is important to understand correctly the type of sacrifices, but things to be more prioritized is to figure out the inherent spirit of sacrifice applying to the real life that we are living and look to the future direction rather than clinging to the past.
