이 논문은 프랑스 제 3공화정 시기에 활동했던 에밀 뒤르케임과 그 학파가 어떻게 그 당시의 이념갈등을 극복하고 사회통합을 성공적으로 끌어낼 수 있었는지,공화주의 이념의 형성이라는 지성사적 맥락에 초점을 맞추어 연구한 것이다. 이작업이 중요한 이유는 이 당시 새롭게 태어난 사회학이 그 학문적 정체성을 수립해가는 과정에서 현대 인문사회학자들이 주목해야 할 다음의 몇 가지 중요한 역할을 했기 때문이다. 첫째 다른 인문·사회과학들과의 협조를 통해서 사회현상을 통합적·학제적 시각에서 다루는 학문적 전통을 만들어냈다. 둘째 자유방임주의에머물러 있던 19세기말 20세기 초 프랑스의 자유주의 이념을 적극적으로 확장해,사회적 자유주의라는 이름으로 복지국가가 탄생하는 데 필요한 사회 철학적 이념을 제공하는 데 결정적 역할을 했다. 셋째, 자유방임주의와 사회주의라는 양극단의 사회발전 모델들 사이에서 공화주의라는 제 3의 발전모델을 제시함으로써, 제3공화정 초기 프랑스 사회의 양극화 현상과 극단적 이념의 혼란 상황을 수습하는데 결정적 기여를 했다. 이 작업을 통해 저자가 주장하는 바는 프랑스 제3공화정당시 뒤르케임과 그 학파의 탄생배경을 공화주의라는 이념모델로 접근할 때, 뒤르케임 이론의 핵심을 차지하는 주요개념들-유기적 연대, 도덕적 개인주의, 민주주의, 현대국가, 직업집단 이론이 유기적으로 더 잘 이해되고, 그의 사상 및 이론체계가 사회통합에 관심을 갖는 사회학도들에게 더욱 분명한 이론적·실천적 함의를갖는 사회학적 교훈을 제공할 수 있다는 것이다.
This article examines the intellectual context of the French 3rd republic with special emphasis on Emile Durkheim and his sociological school‘s republicanism to clarify their successful strategy for overcoming ideological conflicts and achieving social integration. This work is significant for Korean sociology because French sociology, born in this period of searching for identity, gives us some important sociological lessons. First, Durkheimian sociology of this period shows us the role model in explaining social phenomena from the wholistic and interdisciplinary approaches. Second, his sociological school played an active and important role in transforming the 19th century's laissez-faire ideology to the social liberalism. And this contributed to providing the socio-philosophical ideology for launching the French welfare state. Third, the republican ideology, suggested by Durkheimian sociological school as an ideological alternative between laissez-faire ideology and socialism in French 3rd republic, made a decisive contribution to overcoming the critical situation of polarization and chaotic ideological crisis. The thesis I want to argue on the basis of this work is as follows. If we approach the Durkheimian theoretical system and his problematics with republican model, we can better understand the organic connections in the key concepts - organic solidarity, moral individualism, democracy, modern state, andtheory of professional groups-of Durkheimian social theory. And this will help sociologists who are interested in social integration to learn more explicitly practical implications of the Durkheimian social theoretical systems.
