Proletarian Literature and Sensibility －Kim Ki-Jins On theRevolution of Sensibility; Son You-KyungThis paper explores the relationship between the issue of ‘sensibility’ and proletarian literature in the 1920’s by using Kim Ki-Jin’s “On the Revolution of Sensibility” as an exemplary text. Kim Ki-Jin’s notion of ‘sensibility’ refers to emotional response to other’s sufering; on the one hand, it is a part of an instinct of every human being, like apetite and sexual desire. On the other, it is a kind of human insight into the world. Kim Ki-Jin draws on the concept of ‘sensibility’ in order to invent a new type of literature and an image of a human being. His ‘aesthetics of pathos’ is founded on a sensitive response to the fact that life is filed with misery, sufering and pain. Acording to Kim’s “On the Revolution of Sensibility”, the only way to be liberated from bourgeois culture is to recover our opressed instinct and reform our sensibility.In Kim Ki-Jin’s writings, sensibility plays an esential role to develop a new idea of socialist 152literature. His position was very problematic and controversial because KAPF wanted to exclude emotional, sentimental, and aesthetic elements from their literary movement. “On the Revolution of Sensibility” has its foundation on the author’s belief that we should change the capitalist society through the revolution of sensibility on the individual level. Kim Ki-Jin’s understanding of sensibility is crucial to his ethics as well as aesthetics.
