현대 사회는 점차 개인화되고 이기적으로 변해가고 있다. 언론 매체를 통해 가끔씩 보이는 싸이코패스(psychopath)의 강력 범죄를 대하다 보면 악화가 양화를 구축하고 있는 사회를 건전한 모습으로 바꾸기 위해서 특단의 조치가 필요하다는 생각도 든다. 본고는그 특단의 조치 중 한 가지로 공감(共感)에 초점을 맞추었다. 그 중에서도 다양한 측면에서공감의 감수(感受)와 소통의 글쓰기를 보인 박지원에 관심을 두었다. 박지원의 산문에서는 ‘직접적 감수자로서의 공감’, ‘분별 있는 관찰자로서의 동감’ 등이 모두보이며, 자신이 느낀 공감을 타인과 소통하기 위해 글쓰기에도 작지 않은 관심을 기울였다. 그 중 직접적 감수자로서의 공감은 상대방이나 특정 사태를 맞이하는 집단과 개인의 상황에 대해 느끼는 공감으로서, 즉각적이고 그 정도 역시 강하다. 하지만 유대(紐帶)의 끈으로엮어진 만큼 객관성과 중립성을 보장하지는 못한다. 이에 이해관계에 얽매이지 않은 가상의 관찰자인 분별 있는 관찰자로서의 공감으로 그 한계를 보완할 필요가 있다. 그런데 박지원의 의옥서(疑獄書), 상소문(上疏文) 등에서 보이는 공감의 양상을 통해 그가 자신과 밀접한 인물들뿐만 아니라 그렇지 못한 이들에 대해서도 깊은 공감을 표하고 있다는 사실을 알수 있었다. 한편 박지원은 자신이 느낀 공감을 타인과 소통하기 위해 다음과 같이 인물의 내면이나 상황 등을 자세히 드러내 보이는 구체적 글쓰기를 선호하였다. 그것은 첫째, 역지사지(易地思之)의 태도를 선명하게 드러내고, 둘째, 상황과 내면 심리를 구체적으로 서술하며, 셋째, 스스로를 제대로 표현하지 못하는 이들을 대신해서, 그들의 말에 귀 기울이고 그들을 대신해이야기해주는 글쓰기이다. 이로써 보자면, 박지원이 보여준 공감과 글쓰기는 ‘나만 사는 세상’에서 ‘나도 사는 세상’이라는 인식으로 사회적 사고를 전환시키는 데 작지 않은 의미를 줄 것이라 생각한다.
Modern society is turning into selfish. I think that this situation calls for immediate action. Due to this, this study focused on sympathy. Especially this study focused on Park, ji-won’s prose. Because he taken an active interest in sympathy and sympathetic writing. I found both ‘the sympathy as the one who feels directly’ and ‘the sympathy as a judi- cious spectator’ in his prose. And I also found that he taken an active interest in sym- pathetic writing. From among these, the sympathy as the one who feels directly, means the feeling which feels other people’s or other group’s feeling directly. So This sympathy is immediate and direct. But this sympathy never give us a guarantee of objectivity and impartiality. Because this sympathy is caused by a bond. Therefore it must be made up for its fault by the sympathy as a judicious spectator. Especially I found that he had both the sympathy as the one who feels directly and the sympathy as a judicious spectator, through the letters of criminal investigation( 疑獄書 ) and public appeals( 上疏文 ). Meanwhile, Park, Ji-won favored detailed writing, which showed other people’s inner side and the situation. Additionally, he show the attitude of empathy, the detailed writing of inner side, and the distribution of the sensible. Judging from these, the sympathy and writing which Park, Ji-won showed, are meaningful. Because these make us think the community spirit.
