문학의 기원을 논할 때 가장 주요하게 다루어야 하는 주제가 바로 문학 본능이다. ‘모방 본능’, ‘표현 본능’, 그리고 ‘유희 본능’ 등이 그것이다. 이 연구는 ‘표현 본능’을 독립된 주제로 삼아, 표현 본능에 내재된 마음의 법칙을 밝히려고 한다. 즉 뇌 과학이나 신경학의 이론을 접목하고자 한다. 표현 본능이 실제로 유쾌함을 생성하게 하는지, 유쾌함의 메커니즘은 무엇인지, 유쾌함은 긍정적인 정서인지 등등에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 같이 유쾌함의 정체를 밝히는 일은 감정 표현이 본능임을 도출해내는 일이기도 하다. 문학을 통한 감정 표현이 지니는 이득과 보상, 그리고 그 순기능이 무엇인지를 밝히는 일이야말로 문학의 본질적 가치에 대한 재조명이 될 것이다. 그리고 궁극적으로는 문학 교육이 지향해야 하는 방향에 대해 제고하려는 것이다.
When discussing the origin of literature, the most important theme to be addressed is literature instinct. ‘Imitation instinct ', 'expression instinct’ and ‘play instinct’ are the literature instinct. This study is expression instinct as an independent subject, and to prove the law of mind inherent in the expression instinct. Also, it is attempt to combine the theory of brain science and neurology. It is examined the expression instinct what really create the pleasantness, what the mechanism of pleasantness, if the pleasantness a positive emotion is or ect. Likewise, discovering the pleasantness is to deducing the expressing emotion is an instinct. It will be revisited for the intrinsic value of literature that the benefits and rewards of emotional expression through literature and the matter to disclose what the positive function is. Furthermore, this study is to rethink that where the direction of literary education should orient to.
