Grammaticalization refers to the degree of grammatical function a linguistic item has on a scale between purely lexical and purely grammatical meaning. This entails both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective. This paper deals with the grammaticalization of English perception verbsee. It seeks to examine processes of English perception verbseethat has been grammaticalized with the change of the times. In an attempt to provide an account of why Modern English visual perception verbseediffers from that of Old and Middle English, I have shown that there are two kinds of visual perception verbs in English. The major claim is that the differences between stative verb seeon the one hand and active one on the other are as follows: (i) stative verbsee is more grammaitcalized than active one, (ii) the contents of ASP in Modern English are either checked by the perfective evidential or by the form in-ing,In this case, the stative verbseeitself behaves like an auxiliary. Consequently, this type of perception verbseeundergoes grammaticalization from main verb to evidential modal but not until the 19th century did that happen.
