In this paper, We propose that wh-element in the structure of that-trace can move over the labeled phrase from the base position, but it cannot move over the unlabeled phrase. To understand the history of the basic English that-trace paradigm for the difference between pronounced and unpronounced complementizer, we try to observe PF-based analysis of the that-trace effect in Kandybowicz (2006) and Sato & Dobashi (2014) and point out their problems. Furthermore, we consider the analysis of the that-trace effect in Chomsky (2014) and indicate his problem, too. We show that our proposal straightforwardly may account for the core paradigm surrounding that-trace effect and its exceptions triggered by focus and adverb.
