This study investigated Korean learners’ knowledge of the functions of the English indefinite article. For this investigation, 70 college students were divided into two groups (high and low) based on their rank in the college admission English exam and were administered a 12-item exam measuring their ability to use the indefinite article correctly. The two groups showed no significant differences in their knowledge of the indefinite article. In addition, eight kinds of English grammar reference books were analyzed to see how the indefinite article functions were explained in the books. The analysis showed that the explanations about using the indefinite article before uncountable nouns were not provided sufficiently in the books. The findings of this study suggest that Korean learners of English need to expand their understanding of the transferability of English nouns, from a countable to an uncountable noun or from an uncountable to a countable noun to use the indefinite article properly in their spoken or written English.
