This thesis is a study on the external practice of a self-introduction statement depending on such factors as a writer and a reader, the purpose of writing and a way of communication, and on the internal practice of the statement's text itself. Also, in this paper, I suggest how to select contents for teaching self-introduction statement on the basis of the findings. A self-introduction statement is a brief self-introductiory account intended to persuade its reader to select him or her in a competitive entrance examination, whose writer is supposed to be an applicant desiring for an admission to a school or to a company and whose reader is presumed to be a professor of the department he/she is going to apply, or a recruiter, a prospective employer, or personnel manager. A self-introduction statement consists of 'motives for application,' 'appropriateness in terms of aptitude and personality,' and 'future plan.' A self-introduction statement is required to be coherent, and valid in terms of content composition, and it should satisfy the required conditions such as economical efficiency, clarity, cohesiveness, consistency, lexical appropriateness, and correctness of usage . Therefore, I propose that it is necessary to teach knowledge about the generalized concept and typical 'genre' writing practices of a self-introduction statement. In addition, which strategy to be used for drawing up a good self-introduction statement according to the writing procedure - planning, producing contents, organizing contents, drafting, revising and editing - should be taught.
