‘한글’과 ‘국어’는 한국인에게 매우 익숙한 낱말인데, 그 사용 실태는 매우 혼란스럽다. 문자의 명칭인 ‘한글’을 ‘한국어 토박이낱말’이나 ‘한국어 어휘’를 가리키는 데에도 사용하고, 전체로서의 ‘한국어’를 가리키는 데에도 사용한다. ‘국어’는 ‘국가 공용어’를 가리키는 데에 사용하면서 ‘한국어’와 같은 의미로 사용하기도 하며, 나아가 ‘언어’를 가리키는 데에도 사용한다. 그러한 사용이 누적되고 순환하면서 한국어는 ‘한글’에 얽어 매이고, ‘국어’에 갇혀 버렸다. 한국어와 한글이 뒤엉키고, 한국어와 국어가 뒤엉키고, 한글과 국어가 뒤엉켜 버리는, 심각한 지경에 이르렀다. 여러 분야에서 갖가지 문제점이 생겨나고 있다. 나날의 생활에서 의사소통과 정보교환에 장애가 일어나고, 학교 교육에서까지 정확한 지식을 공유하지 못하는 사례가 많다. 이와 같은 문제를 해결하고, 한국어의 앞날을 제대로 열어 가려면, 한국어를 ‘한글’과 ‘국어’로부터 해방시켜야 한다. ‘한글’과 ‘국어’는 제 자리로 돌리고, 한국어의 몫과 자리를 확실히 찾아 주어야 한다. 한국어의 실체와 문제점을 제대로 파악해야 한다. 그리고 한국어를 ‘한국’(대한민국)과 ‘조선’(조선민주주의 인민공화국)의 언저리로부터도 벗어나게 해야 한다. 이렇게 해야만 한국어가 건강하게 발전해 나갈 것이며, 한글도 더욱 충실히 발전해 나갈 것이다.

The Koreans are much familiar with both ‘Hangeul(한글)’ and ‘Gugeo(국어)’. At today’s linguistic life, the terminologies of ‘Hangeul’ and ‘Gugeo’ often are not used or cannot be used same as original concept. ‘Hangeul’ that indicates letters can be used to be ‘the native words of the Korean language’, ‘the Korean vocabulary’ and ‘the Korean language’. And ‘Gugeo’ that indicates ‘the official language of a nation’ as well as ‘languages’ can be done to be ‘a name of the Korean language’. The accumulated use of the words has created a lot of problems because the Korean language is tied into ‘Hangeul’ to be surrounded by ‘Gugeo’. The substance of both the Korean language and Hangeul(Korean Alphabet) has not been examined properly from time to time. The words have difficulty at communication, information exchange and setting, accumulating and sharing of knowledge. To solve the problems, both ‘Hangeul’ and ‘Gugeo’ should be used to express original concept only. Therefore, the Korean language should be free from ‘Hangeul’, ‘Gugeo’ and Korea. In such a way, the Korean language can be developed in healthy way and Hangeul can be also developed more substantially.
