이 연구의 목적은 자신의 사상을 도설(圖說)로써 표현한 남명(南冥)의 「신명사도」를 ‘이야기 지도’로서 해석하고 그 구체적 읽기 방법을 제시하는 것이다. 남명은 자신의 성리학 사상을 「신명사도」라는 도설로서 보여주었다. 그는 자신의 형이상학적 사상을 선형성을 지닌 글말로써 표현하기에 한계를 느꼈으며, 이를 극복하고자 비선형적인 글자의 배열로 이루어진 도설로써 제시하였다. 다양한 방향으로 연결되어 있는 「신명사도」 내의 글자들은 전자말이야기처럼 다양한 읽기 방식과 줄거리를 제공한다. 도설은 전자말 문학의 관점에서 ‘이야기 지도’로서 끌어올 수 있으며, ‘이야기 지도’는 하이퍼텍스트의 설계도에 해당된다. ‘이야기 지도’를 읽는다는 것은 새로운 이야기를 만들면서 읽는다는 뜻이다. 이러한 측면에서 「신명사도」는 동강 김우옹의 『천군전』과는 다른 이야기로 읽을 수 있다.


This study examines Scholar Nam-myung's explanatory diagram ‘Sin-myung-sa-do’ in terms of story map perspectives and suggests the way of reading it. Nam-myung showed his metaphysical philosophy in his explanatory diagram ‘Sin-myung-sa-do’. He was not satisfied expressing his abstract thoughts in words which only carried their meaning in a linear way. Therefore, he arranged the words differently in order to deliver its diverse meanings whenever people read. The words in ‘Sin-myung-sa-do’ provide various reading activities and meanings because they are linked in numerous ways. Nam-myung's explanatory diagram can be called as ‘story map’ with regard to the electric literature. Reading ‘story map’ belongs to electric language reading in that we create totally new stories while immersed in reading. These reasons guarantee that ‘story map’ is a hypertext design. Thus, we are able to judge whether a text is a hypertext or not through the existence of a ‘story map’. And also, ‘Sin-myung-sa-do’ can be read not as Dong Kang's ‘Chen-kun-jeon’ in terms of story map
