This paper is to investigate the incident of Russian battleship ‘Sobol’ in April 1869. Incident of Russian Sobol occurred between Korea and Russia in the territory of Korea, Gangwhado Island. This is the first military conflict which happened in the territory of Korea before official diplomatic relations between Korea and Russia in 1884. That is to say, it was happening that when Russian battleship Sobol was at anchor, dispatched for the purpose of confirming French occupation Gangwhado island and observing missions, Korean and Russian troops accidentally were engaged fight with each other. As there are no information about battleship Sobol, no research publications in Korea, it is important, I think, to inform that before 1884 there was the armed conflict in the territory of Gangwhado island. Morever, taking consideration of Russian position, sending a battleship for investigating and reflecting on her concerns toward Korean Peninsula, it is the fact that Russia had took a little interest in Korea in 1860s. And it was also understood that in those days Russia had much positive viewpoint on Korea, not negative. From this point, the incident of Russian battleship Sobol suggest lots of implications. To my disappointment, there are no resources about this happening in Korea, and because of depending only on Russian resources, so it is so difficult to estimate objectively.
