The monk Sang Ro Kueon is considered one of the famous Buddhist Gasa poets of the period of the late Chosun dynasty and Japan invasion. He composed four pieces of Buddhist Gasa in Korean and about nine hundreds of chinese poets during his whole life. He differed from common other monks by his composition of Buddhist Gasa in Korean and acting as a monk and an intellect. Among monk Sang Ro Kueon’s many literary works, I studied the characteristics of Sang Ro Kueon’s Buddhist Gasa(歌辭). Firstly, I found that the first characteristic of Sang Ro Kueon’s Buddhist Gasa is to teach people by instigating to study and realize the Buddha’s teaching. In order to reach that goal, he represented Buddha’s life as model. And he established “WE” as narrater and hearer for familarity in their relation ship. Also he used the narration style of requesting. Secondly, I researched that the second characteristic of Sang Ro Kueon’s Buddhist Gasa is to be very abstractive in his Buddhist Gasa contents. Specially his Buddhist Gasa was very abstractive in dimension how to study Buddhism and how to worship Buddha. Thirdly, I recovered that the third characteristic of Sang Ro Kueon’s Buddhist Gasa is to be commemorative in about Buddha and Buddha’s life, Buddha’s teaching. The commemorativeness of Sang Ro Kueon’s Buddhist Gasa is socially public in Buddhist community differently from the Buddhist song in the early Chosun period were nationally public in Royal Court, his Buddhist Chinese poetry are private in personal relationship.
