The aim of the article is to illuminate the grammatical characteristics of Kim Gyusik’s 『Joseonmunbeop』 and Ju Sigyeong’s 『Kugeomunbeop』 by comparing underlying structures in their syntax. For this, to begin with, the article compared all exemplary sentences employed in these grammars. After that, by analysing and comparing the definitions of terms shown in two grammars, the article revealed the grammatical characteristics of them and, furthermore, worked to investigate the analytical methods of sentence structures in two grammars. In 『Joseonmunbeop』, employing a variety of types of examples and various terms, the author diversly described various phenomena related to so called underlying structures. In 『Kugeomunbeop』, employing restricted examples and terms, the author analysed them consistently and systematically. The author introduced the notion of ommission in the descriptions in 『Joseonmunbeop』 but this kind of notion does not exist in 『Kugeomunbeop』. So it seems that there is the notion corresponding to a syntactical underlying structure in 『Joseonmunbeop』, and, but not the notion in 『Kugeomunbeop』 and the author can be seen to give a semantic underlying structure instead in 「Kugeomunbeop」. A simple sentence and a conjunct sentence are classified in 『Joseonmunbeop』 but are not in 『Kugeomunbeop』. In 『Kugeomunbeop』, in the case of a conjunct sentence corresponding to phrase connection(gujeopssok), similar examples with the case of 『Joseonmunbeop』 are addressed but the descriptive methods are different.
