본고는 한국학중앙연구원 문중 기탁본인 <창원 황씨 한글 간찰>을 대상으로 서지적인 사항을 검토하고, 국어학적 특징을 표기, 어휘, 문법 등으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그동안 한글 간찰에 대한 학계의 관심은 허웅(1989)에서 <충북 청주 순천묘 출토 간찰>을 16세기 국어 기술에서 언급한 이후 자료 발굴과 소개의 차원에서 벗어나 이제는 본격적인 역주 결과물들이 나오게 되었다. 흔히 ‘언간(諺簡)’으로 불리는 조선 시대 한글 간찰은 번역을 전제하지 않아 당시의 국어 문법이 자연스럽게 반영되어 있다. 이에 따라 ‘언해(諺解)’ 자료에 잘 보이지 않는 문법 규칙이나 고유의 일상 어휘가 풍부하게 나타나며, 또한 구어체 자료의 성격 때문에 구어나 방언이 어느 자료보다 풍부하게 반영되는 특징을 보인다. 그러므로 언간은 판본 위주의 국어사 연구를 보완할 자료로서의 가치를 지니고 있다. 본고는 그간 한글 간찰 역주 결과를 바탕으로 <창원 황씨 한글 간찰>을 대상으로 몇 가지 주목할 만한 국어학적 특징을 기술한 것이다.

In fact, Korean Old Vernacular Letters have not been made the best use for research due to the difficulties in deciphering and interpreting them. However, books of translations with notes on the Korean Old Vernacular Letters ave sprung up since the 1990s. As a result, we saw great strides have made both in the quantity and quality of translation. I believed that Korean Old Vernacular Letters supplement vernacular Korean translation documents and the history of Korean language. We should positively promote the discovery of new Korean Old Vernacular Letters and push for further interdisciplinary studies in the future.
