Park, su-mil. 2007. The 18th Century, Possibility of Representation and Truth. This study is to focus on the matter of representation in the 18th century. The scholars in the Middle Ages considered that the ancient times of China is most ideal. However, together with Yeon-Am, the scholars of The Study of the North thought that ‘now and here’ is an actual space of the truth. They did not stand away from the real world. They sought for the truth, fighting against the real world full of false images and distortion. They cast a question of that this world is real, making full use of a paradox and an allegory. They used an analogical approach, watching the gaps in order to overcome the limitmation of a sensory organ. Yeon-Am’s thought contains the figures of postmodern. The soul of the humanities in the 18th century of seeking after the truth ‘now and here’ gives significant suggestions till now. The sincerity of the 18th century of casting a question if this world really is the world worthy of living, can be valid still today in the reality of postmodern literature.
