The aim of this study is to analyze the epistemic modality meaning of the ending form {-ji}. In Chapter Ⅰ, the purpose and necessity for this study. In Chapter Ⅱ, the method in which this study was conducted are described. In Chapter Ⅲ, the epistemic modality meanings of {-ji} are analyzed. The result of the semantic analysis of the epistemic modality of {-ji} is as follows. The ending form {-ji} has [assimilated information] in the scope of degree of assimilation of information and [assuming listener’s knowledge] in the scope of assumption on the state of the listener’s knowledge. In the case of [assimilated information], the meaning can be further broken down into ‘past recognition sustenance’ and ‘past recognition discontinuity’ and in the case of [assuming listener’s knowledge], the meaning can further broken down into ‘factual assumption’ and ‘obligatory assumption’. In Chapter Ⅳ, the research is concluded and the results of this research are summarized, with mentions to the significance and limitations of this research.
