이 글은 문순태의 소설집 『울타리』에 수록된 노년소설들의 분석에 주안점을 두고 있다. 문순태의 소설은 노년소설로서의 성격과 조건을 두루 구비하고 있을 뿐 아니라 노년의 삶에 얽힌 여러 측면을 다양하고 심도 있게접근하고 있다는 점에 주목된다. 노년소설의 가능성을 가늠하고 그 지향점을추출하는 데 유익한 시사점을 제공해 줄 것으로 기대되기 때문이다. 노년소설의 범주 및 그 대상과 관련해서는 연구자들마다 조금씩 관점의차이를 보이고 있다. 하지만 노년소설은 노인들이 주요 인물로 등장하고작품의 소재 역시 노년의 삶에 초점을 두고, 화자도 노인들이 설정된 경우가 많다는 점에 대해서는 대체로 이견이 없다. 이 글에서는 문순태의 노년소설의 분석을 통해 소설에 나타난 노인상과 소통의 방식을 추출하는데주안점을 두어 접근해 보았다. 노년기에 접어든 작가들이 노년의 삶을 소재로 작품화 한 경우 작품의문학성은 물론이거니와 작품의 수준이 비교적 높은 점도 주목할 만한 문학현상으로 보았다. 더욱이 우리나라의 노인의 경우 유년시절에 한국전쟁을겪거나 더 거슬러 올라가면 일제 강점기를 겪으면서 정신적으로 많은시련을 겪은 세대다. 따라서 노년기에 접어든 작가들이 자신의 경험과 삶을올올이 창작품으로 형상화 했을 경우 그것이 갖는 문학적 의미와 자산을소홀히 할 수 없는 측면을 지닌다. 동시에 우리나라는 고령화 사회로의진전 속도가 가파르게 진전되면서 노인문제가 주요한 사회문제의 하나로대두되고 있는 추세다. 이 글에서 문순태의 노년소설에 주목한 것도 이러한맥락에서다. 문순태의 소설은 노년소설로서의 성격을 두루 구비하고 있다는 점에서시사점을 제공해 준다. 무엇보다도 작품 속의 노인들은 대체로 건강성과검질긴 생명력을 갖고 있다. 격동의 현대사를 거쳐 오는 동안 여러 형태의트라우마(trauma)를 안고 있건만 서로의 상처를 들춰내 덧내는 것이 아니라용서와 화해의 인간성을 복원하려는 건강성을 지닌다. 그렇다고 문순태의작품 속에 나타난 노인상은 노년의 삶을 과장하거나 미화한 것과는 거리가멀다. 노년의 삶을 소재로 하면서 때로는 진솔하게 노년의 삶이 안고 있는여러 형태의 소외와 밀려남, 무력감을 드러내기도 하지만 다양한 노년상을설정한다는 점에서 시사적이다. 노년의 삶이 안고 있는 다양성과 다층성을제대로 아우르고 있는 셈이다. 이것은 노년소설의 한 유형으로서 중요한의미를 지니거니와 노년소설의 가능성을 가늠해 보는 데에도 유익한 점을지닌다. 과거 노년소설의 모습과는 일정한 차별성을 보이고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 문순태의 소설은 근래 들어 노년의 삶을 소재로 한 작품들을 비교적활발하게 창작해 왔을 뿐 아니라 노년소설의 지향점을 제대로 짚고 있다는 점에서 문제성을 지닌다.

This study focused on Mun Sun-tae's novels to find out the value and the prospect of the old age novel. While it might be open to dispute where to draw the line of old age novel, it can be narrowed down to novels wherein an old man is the leading character and which deal with the lives of the old. A writer himself gets old as a natural person. Some aging writers who have reached their senescence, have released noticeable novels about the everyday lives of the old. In this case, the novels wherein the writers themselves aging as natural persons wrote about the lives of the old, proved to be high-quality. As an old age is the time for arranging one's life, the old age novel broaches death and arouses the fundamental nature of our lives. In this sense, it is worth researching on literary implications and meanings of literary history of the old age novel. Novels of Mun Sun-tae are especially noteworthy. Although ther is a limitation that this study is focused only on novels of Mun Sun-tae, it is because his novels clearly connect with the possibility and the aim of old age novels. It seems that further study on works of the old age novel such as works of Lee Chung-jun, Kim Won-il, Oh Jeong-hui, Park Wan-seo, would give some implications about the problems and future direction of the old age novel.
