이 글의 목적은 우리나라 대표 축제 중 역사가 2013년 현재 제83회로 가장 오래된 춘향제의 현황과 향후 나아가야 할 방향을 모색하고자 하는 데 있다. 춘향제는 사랑의 테마도시 남원을 대표하는 축제로서 매년 사랑을 주제로 한국 최고의 전통문화축제이자 문화관광축제로 개최되고 있다. 2009년부터 2012년까지 4년 연속 우수축제로 선정됐던 춘향제를 한 단계 위인 최우수 축제로 승격시키기 위해 남원시는 심혈을 기울여 왔었다. 춘향제는 우리나라 어느 축제도 가지지 못한 문화적 자산을 가지고 있고, 사랑을 주제로 한 축제는 춘향제가 전국에서 유일하기 때문에 우리나라뿐만 아니라 전 세계적인 축제로 나아갈 수 있는 가능성이 충분하다. 춘향제가 전통문화예술축제임에는 틀림없으나 관광객이나 시민에게서 사랑받는 축제로 승화되어야 춘향제가 세계축제로 발돋움할 수 있다.
The main purposes of this writing are to look into the current status of Chunhyang Festival that is one of the oldest festivals in my country, having 83-year-old history and seek for its direction forward. Chunhyang Festival is held every year as a representative one of Namwon, which is Korea's best traditional and cultural tourism festival. It was awarded as one of the excellent festivals for four years in a row from 2009 to 2012. Now Namwon City has endeavored to elevate its rank to the best that is one level higher than the excellent one. Chunhyang Festival has abundant cultural assets that are difficult to be found in other festivals. It is also the only festival whose theme is 'love'. These two important factors will make it possible to lead it from the country's one to the world's one. It sure is the traditional and cultural festival, but, first of all, it should be loved by the tourists and Namwon citizens in order to be able to be upgraded to one of the international festival.
