The New Studies of English Language & Literature 40, 2008. 265-285. The purposes of the current study are to figure out what the low-level high school students know about English collocation, and to examine the relationship between knowledge of English collocations and reading comprehension. The study was carried out with a total of 104 low-level high school students, using the methods of questionnaire survey, and two test sets of pre- and post-collocation tests and pre- and post-reading comprehension tests. The three-month study yielded that 1) the students’ knowledge of collocations increased significantly after the collocation-based instruction; and 2) collocation-based instruction exerted a positive impact on the lower-level high school students’ reading ability. Therefore, the teachers need to give thought to explicit teaching of collocations in their classrooms. Followed are some suggestions for teachers who may use the instruction performed in the study.
