This paper examines the characteristics of one of Goldsmith’s laughing comedies She Stoops to conquer with respect to its plot, characters, wit, farce, and dramatic techniques. In respect to plot development, the episode which makes the characters mistake an old mansion for an inn becomes the driving force inducing the laughter. The creation of characters-Marlowe, who keeps the grace of 18th century decorum; a wise woman Kate, who tests the truth of the man she loves in the disguise of a maid ; and the playful Tony who is mischievous but without any malice-also makes this play follow the traditions of classic comedy. In addition, the roles played by the lower class people in this play well reflect the definitions of comedy since Aristotle that a comedy deals with the follies of lower class people. One of the reasons why this play achieved a big success as a laughing comedy is that wit and farce are found everywhere in this play.
