본 논문은 근래에 만들어진 이야기들 가운데에서 한국과 일본의 귀신이나 요괴(妖怪) 이야기들을 분석 대상으로 하여, 두 나라의 민속문화가 가지고 있는 차이점과 공통점을 구명하는 것을 연구 목적으로 하였다. 이렇게 현대담을 고찰하려고 한 이유는 지금까지 한국의 구비문학계에 있어서는 현대담(現代譚)에 대한 연구가 거의 이루어지지 않고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 이웃하고 있는 한일 두 나라의 민속 현상에 대한 비교 연구에 관심을 보이는 연구자들도 그렇게 많지 않기 때문이다.이와 같은 목적 아래서 수행된 본 연구를 통해서 한국의 현대담 이 오늘날을 살아가고 있는 한국인들의 심성을 잘 반영하고 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 그리고 한국과 일본의 민속사회가 공통되는 요소도 가지고 있지만, 변별되는 요소도 가지고 있다는 것을 규명하였다. 이를테면 한국과 일본의 민속문화가 다 같이 비일상적인 세계의 존재를 인정하고 있다는 것은 공통되는 요소에 해당된다. 하지만 전자에서는 비일상적인 세계가 지하에 존재한다고 보고 있는데 비해, 후자에서는 그런 세계가 현실 속에 존재한다고 보고 있는 것과 같은 차이가 있다는 것이다. 이러한 공통점과 차이점을 구명하면서, 앞으로 이와 같은 연구 를 진척시켜 나아간다면 한국과 일본이 상대방에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 계기를 마련하는 데 기여할 수 있다는 가능성을 발견하였다. 지금도 우리는 서로 간에 가깝고도 먼 나라로 인식하고 있다. 이러한 인식은 결국 상대의 문화를 이해하려고 하지 않고, 자기의 측면에서 상대를 바라보고 있기 때문이라는 점에서, 이런 연구가 더 많이 이루어져야 한다는 것을 지적해둔다.

This paper purports to analyze stories or talks about Korean and Japanese ghosts and monsters made in modern times, then compare the stories in terms of difference and sameness between the two countries' folklore. One reason to examine such talks is that there have yet been many studies regarding interest in modern talks about ghosts and monsters of Korean oral folklore. Another reason is that the comparison of such folkloric talks between Korea and Japan would contribute to helping to understand each other. It is proved in the paper that folklore(s) of Korea and Japan contain not only things in common but elements differentiated from each other. For instance, as a same feature, both countries' folklore suggests the existence of a world different from our daily world. As different features, Korean folklore indicates such a world to exist underground while the Japanese seem to believe it to exist in this real world. There will be a possibility to extend our understanding toward to each other, Korea and Japan, if we pursue further studies on folkloric talks between Korea and Japan with respect to their difference and sameness. Two countries have been recognizing each other as a country so near and yet so far. This is because one hasn't tried to understand the other's culture, but rather look at the other from one's own side or point of view. Consequently, in order to overcome such a problem or misunderstanding, studies like this paper must be practiced more.
