이 글의 목적은 중세국어 ‘-과라’, ‘-과다’에서 확인되는 ‘-과-’의 형태ㆍ통사적 특성에 대해서 살펴보고 그 문법적 의미 기능을 규명하는 데에 있다. 언어의 유형론적으로 교착어에 속하는 국어에서 형태의 의미 기능을 밝히는 일은 무엇보다도 중요하다. 그래서 국어 문법사의 대부분의 연구가 형태소 혹은 어미에 관하여 이루어졌다. 그러나 아직도 몇몇 형태에 대한 분석이나 기능에 대한 의심은 여전히 남아 있다. 그러한 형태 중의 하나가 ‘-과라’, ‘-관뎌’ 등에서 확인되는 ‘-과-’라고 생각한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 ‘-과-’가 활발하게 사용된 중세국어를 중심으로 ‘-과-’의 형태ㆍ통사적 특성을 면밀하게 살펴본 다음에 ‘-과-’의 문법적 의미 기능을 규명하고 그 통시적 변화를 관찰하였다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the morphological and syntactic characteristics of ‘-과-' that we can see in the forms of ’-과라', ‘-과다', ‘-관뎌’ and consider its grammatical meaning and diachronic changes. In Korean as agglutinative language, investigating the function of morphs is significant. Therefore, the majority of Historical Grammar of Korean has focused on morphemes or endings. But some problems related to the analysis of a few of morphs and their main function still leave. I think that one of such morphs is ‘-과-' that we can find in the forms of ‘-과라', ‘-과다’ and ‘-관뎌'. In brief, this thesis aims to explain the grammatical meaning and the diachronic changes of ‘-과-' after observing the morphological and syntactic characteristics of it especially depending on Middle Korean language.
