이 논문은 시조창 가집 『시조집(연대본)』의 체제 및 수록작품의 특징을 통해 19세기 중후반에서 20세기초에 이르는 가집사에서 『시연』의 시조사적 위치를 자리매김하는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 먼저 『시연』은 크게 가사, 가곡, 시조의 세 항목으로 구성되어 있으나 전체적인 중심은 시조창에 놓여 있는 시조창 가집이다. 여기서 가사부는 구성과 레파토리에 있어서는 20세기 잡가집과 가까우며, 사설 표현에 있어서는 변이의 폭이 크고 유동적이다. 가곡부는 대체로 전통적인 가곡창 사설을 수용하되 19세기 후반 이후 시조창 가집의 신출작품을 가져다 쓰기도 하였다. 시조부에서는 전체적으로 시조의 표기법을 따르되 ‘종장 말구의 생략’이라는 표기 원칙이 융통성 있게 적용되고 있다. 이러한 체제상의 특징으로 볼 때 『시연』은 가창용 교본의 성격보다는 당대 유행하는 노랫말을 모아 놓은 대중가집에 가깝다고 할 수 있다. 또한 『시연』의 수록작품의 특징은 먼저 선행 텍스트의 적극적 수용과 개작 및 윤색 등을 통한 사설의 적극적 변개 등을 들 수 있다. 이는 당대 시조 향유층의 언어 취향과 관습이 보다 쉽고 간명한 표현을 선호하는 데서 기인한 것으로 보인다. 또한 수록작품의 공출빈도 등으로 볼 때 『연의』 등 20세기 초반 시조창 가집들과의 친연성이 높은 만큼 이 가집의 출현시기를 20세기 초반으로 추정해 볼 수 있다. 『시연』을 비롯한 이 시기 가집들은 선행하는 19세기의 『가곡원류』계열 가집과 『남훈태평가』의 흐름을 충실히 따르면서도, 동시대에 편찬된 시조창 가집들과도 긴밀한 관계 속에 놓여 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이는 이 가집들의 편찬에 있어서 작품 취택의 기준이 결국은 노랫말로서의 가능성과 지속성을 고려하고 있음을 말해준다. 19세기 전통적 레퍼토리의 수용과 변개, 20세기 새로운 레퍼토리의 출현 등은 19세기와 20세기를 잇는 이 시기 가집들의 역할을 여실히 보여주고 있는 것이다.

In This paper, I introduced the formation of 『Sijojip』, the anthology of Sijo-chang(時調唱) and indicated the characteristics of its texts. The purpose of this paper is to realize historic topology of 『Sijojip』 and development of the anthology of Sijo-chang from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. 『Sijojip』 included Gasa, Gagok, and Sijo. but this book is the anthology of Sijo-chang. As a result of analyzing the formation of this gajip(歌集), it is proved that it was popular gajip from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The characteristics of texts in 『Sijojip』 are positive acceptance of preceding gajips and contemporary gajips. And remaking and lard of texts of other gajip is especially meaningful attempt. This realize a deep affection from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. And this confirm own's position and identity in gajips. This paper's objects were arranged to record the words of a song in gajip. As seen from above, The outcome and prospects of this study run as follows ; At first, we can understand formation of 『Sijojip』 through this gajip. Second, we can also grasp the characteristics of its texts. Third, we can compare the present with the past of Sijo-chang(時調唱)
