<남염부주지>는 시대의 타락상을 목도하며 그 속에서 삶의 방향을 잡아가야 했던 김시습이 삶의 문제에 대해 자신의 해답을 추구한 작품이다. 경주에 사는 박생은 타락한 가치에 의해 지배되는 현실세계에서 당위적 질서와 현실의 질서, 이론과 실제가 어로 어긋남으로써 파생되는 괴리와 논리적 모순에 직면해 심각한 인식의 혼란을 겪게 되고, 이 과정에서 일리론이라는 글을 지어 삶에 대한 자세를 가다듬는다. 꿈에 염부주에 간 박생은 염왕과의 문답을 통해 당위적 질서와 현실의 질서, 이론과 실제가 어긋남으로써 하늘에는 요괴의 변괴가 나타나고, 인간세상은 타락한 가치에 의해 지배되고 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 그리고 하늘과 인간세상의 질서를 어지럽히는 것은 결국 인간세상의 질서를 바로 잡음으로써 해결될 수 있고, 인간세상의 질서를 바로 잡기 위해서는 정치의 정도를 회복하는 것이 중요하다는 결론에 도달할 수 있었다. 그러나 정치마저도 당위적 질서는 이론으로만 존재하고 현실의 정치는 타락한 가치에 지배되고 있었다. 마침내 박생은 죽어서 염부주의 왕이 됨으로써 삶의 바른 이치가 지켜져야 한다는 염원을 살현하려 한다. 타락한 가치에 지배되는 세상에서 살기보다 삶의 바른 이치가 지켜져야 한다는 신념을 죽으로써 지키려 한 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the internal aspects and meaning in Namyeombujuji writen by Kim Si-Seop. He saw the depravity of his era, and intended to find a solution to the problem of the real world in Nam yeombujuji. In Namyeombujuji, the world is ruled by corrupt values, which stem from the disparate concept between theory and practice, and dissociation between normative order and actual order. And Mr. Park undergoes a seriously cognitional confusion by being faced with the separation between theory and practice, normative order and actual order, and logical contradiction. In this process, he intends to reform the course of his life by writing a treatise entitled Ilriron(一理論), in which he asserted that there is only one principle in this world. In a dream, Mr. Park, who lived in Kyungju, went to the Hell called Nam yeomjubu (南炎浮洲), and came to know that there extraordinary calamity occurred in heaven, and his world was ruled by corrupt values due to the dissociation between theory and practice, and discordance between normative order and actual order, through the questions and answers with the King of Hades. He arrives at a conclusion that it is very important that the path of righteousness for politics should be restored in order to reform the order of human society. However, normative order existed only nominally even in politics, and actual world was ruled by corrupt values. Ultimately, Mr. Park intends to fulfill his long-cherished desire by choosing death for himself and becoming the King of Hades. In order to show that right reason(principle) should be observed in human society, he acted up to his conviction by his dying rather than lived in the world ruled by corrupt values.
