<위생전>은 17세기 소설 가운데서 특이한 위상을 점하고 있다. 공간을 인물의 운명으로 조건지우는 한편 삶의 가치를 다층화하는 수단으로 삼았기 때문에 이렇게 볼 수 있다. 공간은 두 가닥의 대열로 나타난다. 한 가닥은 인물이 소망을 이루는 공간 대열이고, 다른 한 가닥은 인물이 소망을 이루지 못하는 공간 대열이다. 위경천은 성격이 다른 두 가닥의 공간 대열을 교차적으로 밟아나간다. 세 차례나 제시되는 소숙방의 집을 A대열이라 하고 악양성 나루터, 위경천의 집, 전장터를 B대열이라 할 때, A대열 → B대열 → A대열 → B대열 → A대열의 과정을 보인다. A대열에서 내세우는 가치는 개체의 행동양식이고, B대열에서 내세우는 가치는 집단의 윤리체계인데, 각 공간 대열은 서로 자기 쪽으로 위경천을 끌어들이고자 한다. <위생전>의 의의는 여기서 드러난다. 17세기의 공간이 인물에게 어떤 영향을 끼치는지를 세세하게 파헤침으로써, 공간을 다변화하고 인간의 삶을 입체적으로 형상화했다는 점이 <위생전>의 의의가 된다.
It is noticeable that the space-oriented plot technique was utilized very well in “Biograph of Wi, Gyung-cheon” among those novels written during 17th century, and some space characteristics and actions of characters are investigated in the view of literature-history as follows; First, spaces in the novel can be classified into two sides. One was space's formation that character's wishes were realized and the other was not. Former was amicable to the character and latter was not. Second, whether the side was amicable or not, each side tried to control character along with each one's status, and in this point, “Biograph of Wi, Gyung-cheon” can be said to have plot that two side competed to draw the character into its own domain. Third, Wi took the worth that ‘one side' advocated, and ‘his taking' became against what ‘the other side' advocated. Wi took the worth to obtain his own identity, and his action can be, logically, said to show ‘resistance against the other worth'. Fourth, in “Biograph of Wi, Gyung-cheon”, both centrifugal space and centripetal space can be seen simultaneously, and one space stared at the other space, and confrontal composition appeared with non-Euclidean geometric recognition. The novel has remarkable literature-historic meaning in the point that it gave diversity to spaces and actualized human lives stereoscopically.
