본 연구는 국어가 수행해 온 통시적 발달의 결과로 나타난 재어휘화의 모습으로 존재하는 /j/ 첨가의 국어학적 성격에 대한 연구사적 고찰을 통하여 이 변화의 특징이 무엇인가를 파악하고, 이 현상과 관련된 전남방언의 분화 양상을 파악하는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구 결과, /j/ 첨가의 국어학적 성격에 대해서는 일정한 음성 조건과는 관련이 없는무조건적 변화에 속하는 것으로서, 체언을 비롯하여 동사나 부사와 같은 상당히 다양한문법 범주에 적용되어 온 것이라는 사실과 함께, 일정한 조건적 환경에서 오랜 기간에걸쳐 수행되었던 /j/ 첨가와 탈락이 무조건적 환경으로까지 확대 적용된 데 그 동기와원인이 있음을 확인하였다. 전남 방언에서는 /j/ 첨가가 어떠한 양상으로 나타나고 있으며, 그러한 실현 양상과관련하여 나타나는 전남 방언의 분화상은 어떠한가에 대해서는, 어간말 모음이 /아, 어/인 경우에는 상당히 생산적으로, /오/인 경우에는 몇몇 어휘에만 제한적으로 적용되되,체언의 경우는 물론 몇몇 동사나 부사의 어간말 모음 뒤에서도 실현되고 있음을 밝혀내었다. 또한, 일부 어휘의 실현 양상이 방언권에 따라 상당한 차이를 보이는바, 전남의북동부 지역어에서 가장 활발하게 실현되는 반면, 서남부 지역에서는 가장 낮은 실현율을 보임으로써 /j/ 첨가가 전남방언의 방언권을 설정하는 데 상당히 중요한 요소로 작용할 가능성이 있음을 확인하였다.
This study aims to identify characteristics of /j/ addition and aspects of differentiation of dialects of Jeollnamdo. For the purpose, it examined characters of /j/ addition in Korean linguistics which exists as a case of relexicalization due to diachronic development of Korean language. As a result, it was found that /j/ addition is a unconditional change irregardless of specific phonetic conditions and has been used for various grammatical categories such as verbs or adverbs including uninflected words. Then it was discovered that there are motives and reasons why the ranges of its addition and dropping which have occurred under certain conditions have been expanded even to unconditional environment. This study analysed what aspect /j/ addition has in dialects of Jeollanamdo and how the dialects with /j/ addition have been differentiated. It discovered that it was productively applied for dialects with /a, eo/ as vowels of stem ending and limitedly for dialects with /o/ as a stem ending vowel, but for uninflected words, it was used after stem ending vowels of some verbs or adverbs. There was a considerable difference in its application. It was realized the most actively in the northeast area of Jeollanamdo while its southwest area had the lowest rate of its application. Therefore, it was demonstrated that there is a possibility that /j/ addition works as an important factor in deciding the dialect areas of Jeollanamdo.
