본 연구는『조선동화대집』의 형식과 내용적 특징을 고찰하여, 문학사적 위상을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이런 연구 목적 아래 수행된 결과를 요약하면 아래와 같다. 첫째, 심의린은 『조선동화대집』을 통해 우리말 어휘의 확충에 힘쓰면서, 재미나 흥미를 유발하여 아동의 상상력 제고에 이바지하였다. 그리고 이와 같은 편저의 의도가 명확했던 것으로 보아, 그는 ‘동화’라는 갈래를 명백하게 인식하고 있었다. 둘째, 『조선동화대집』에 실린 동화들은 무엇인가 결핍되어 있는 기점 상황(initial situation)에서 시작되어 그것이 제거되는 충족의 종점 상황(final situation)으로 끝나는 이야기가 많은 양을 차지하고 있었다. 이것은 당시 일제 강점기에서 아동들로 하여금 위기로부터 벗어나게 하고, 나아가서는 일제 강점기 상황의 극복이라는 인식을 심어 주기 위한 것이었다고 보았다. 셋째, 심의린은 번안동화를 통해 시대적 변화에 부응하는 인간상(人間像)과 평등사상을 고취하려고 하였다. 넷째, 『조선동화대집』에는 바보이야기를 다룬 소화가 많았다. 심의린은 맥락효과를 통해 신문물을 받아들이지 못하는 조선인에 대한 교육적 측면을 강조하였다. 다섯째, 『조선동화대집』에서는 조선총독부의 『조선동화집』에서 왜곡한 조선 설화의 본래의 모습을 찾으려고 노력했다는 점에서, 일제에 대한 저항과 함께 민족적 기질을 드러내었다. 이상의 결과를 토대로 『조선동화대집』은 『조선동화집』에서 보여준 왜곡된 조선인의 정서를 수정하였고, 이것은 민족적 기질을 지니고 있던 심의린의 편저자로서의 특징을 보여주면서, 『조선동화대집』이 전인․계몽의 아동 독서물로서의 문학사적 위상이 있음을 밝혔다.
This thesis analyzed characteristics of the contents and forms of 『Choseon Donghwa Daejip(朝鮮童話大集)』 to define the historical position in the literature. The abstract of the result of the analysis for the purpose is as follows. First, Shim Eui-rin(沈宜麟) contributed to the children's talent of imagination by invoking the interest and curiosity as well as enhancing Korean language vocabulary in the stories of 『Choseon Donghwa Daejip』 . Considering the intention of his works to edit the stories, I could assume that he definitely recognized the genre of 'Fairy Tale'. Second, many of stories in 『Choseon Donghwa Daejip』 showed starting point from initial situation which lacks something in the story and finished at the point of final situation to result the fulfillment by eliminating the lack. The plot of the stories were interpreted as an important measure to escape from the crisis under the Japanese conquer of Choseon(Korea) and overcome the colonial situation to the children. Third, Shim Eui-rin tried to raise the idea of humanity to respond to the changes of the era and human equality through the Fairy Tale translation. Fourth, 『Choseon Donghwa Daejip』listed many short stories about idiot many of stories. Shim Eui-rin must have tried to emphasize the educational aspect of Choseon people who can not accept new culture through context effect. Fifth, 『Choseon Donghwa Daejip』tried to recover original features of Choseon tale which had been distorted in Japanese Choseon Colonial Administration edition of 『Choseon Donghwajip(朝鮮童話集)』, which revealed nationalism and resistance to the Japanese emperor. As a result, this analysis defined the historical position of 『Choseon Donghwa Daejip』and evaluated as a good readable book for children which shows a humanity․enlightenment by amending the distorted emotion of Choseon people in 『Choseon Donghwajip』.
