이 논문은 박완서 소설 속 한국전쟁의 기억 양상에 대해 살피고 있다. 대부분의 선행연구에서 한국전쟁에 대한 박완서의 기억은 개인적 회상의 차원에서 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 작가의 소설에 나타난 기억은 순수한 사적 기억이라기보다는 집단적 기억의 자장 안에 놓인 회상의 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 이때 기억은 강요된 집단기억이 무엇인지를 증언하는 것으로 박완서는 한국전쟁에 대한 기억의 복원을 통해 특정한 사건과 장소에 남아 있는 집단적 상처와 억압, 그리고 그 치유과정을 추적하면서 여전히 유효한 민족 집단의 비극에 다가선다. 박완서는 전후 반공 이데올로기의 억압 속에서 주체의 내면을 왜곡하고 개인의 성찰을 불가능하게 만드는 집단기억의 폐쇄적이며 억압적인 기억에 주목한다. 당대 집단의 이해와 필요에 따라 기억을 선별적으로 재구성하는 집단기억에 저항하면서 더 이상 사적인 체험에 한정되지 않는 특수한 역사적 국면, 예컨대 일제 식민지, 한국전쟁, 반공주의에 입각한 군사독재 체제 같은 시대 상황과 마주한 주체로서의 개인을 회상하는 것이다. 이는 역사적 계기로 인한 억압의 기억, 은폐되고 억압된 정체성을 현실의 맥락에서 회상하고 복원하는 일이다. 또한 작가는 집단 기억의 생산 과정을 탐색하면서, 기록되는 것과 지워지는 것, 기억되는 것과 망각되는 것의 대비를 통해 회상의 실체에 다가선다. 이를 통해 강요된 지식과 앎 속에서 무시되거나 폄하된, 차별화되어 흩어졌던 기억들을 조립하고 무엇이 기억되고 어떤 것이 침묵되는지, 왜 기억이 부인되고 망각되는가를 구체화 시킨다. 그것은 ‘고향’을 기억함으로서 정체성의 복원을 시도하고, 전쟁의 상흔을 간직한 신체를 회상함으로써 집단적 기억과 당대의 역사적 사실을 드러내는 과정으로 이해할 수 있다.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspect of Korean War and the memory on the novel of Park, wan-seo. Most of the previous studies mainly discussed Park’s memory for the Korean War in terms of the recall. However, the memory in this novel might be the collective memory rather than the personal memory. In this case, the collective memory proved that retrospection is limited to the social; the writer still effectively describes the tragedy of an ethnic group by tracking the healing process, injure, and oppression to be left at the place and memory that the events happened through the writer’s personal memory for the war. Her novel shows the closed and oppressive aspects of the collective memory that make it impossible to reflect the personal introspection and distort the look deep into ourselves under the pressure towards ideology of anticommunism after the war. Upon the necessity and understanding for the group, this makes the memory to be restructured selectively, and oblivion makes it to be easily used to another aspect of the memory. Experience of the war is no more a personal one and that will remember or restore the individual as each subject in the middle of the age such as a specific historical conjuncture, Japanese colonial rule, Korean War and a military political system based on the anticommunism This is the memory to restore the oppressive memories, covered up ego in the same context due to the historical opportunity. With a notice of processing collective memory, Park, wan-seo enables us to look into the truth for the collective memory through the between recorded and erased things like public and personal memory or between remembered and forgotten things. She puts together the imposed knowledge and the memories which are scattered, discriminated, ignored, and derogated, and she also specifically reproduces why the memory is denied and forgotten in her novel. She is trying to restore the identity by remembering the home, and allow meeting the collective memory and the historical facts of that time by remembering the body scar through the war.
