본고는 한·중 속담에 나타난 부처에 대한 인식을 비교 고찰하고, 양국의 불교 관련 속담의 특징을 중심으로 불교 관련 속담과 불교의 영향 관계에 대해 고찰한 글이다. 먼저, 한국과 중국의 속담 중에서 부처가 등장하는 속담을 부처에 대한 긍정적인 인식, 부처에 대한 부정적인 인식, 부처를 대하는 민중의 태도로 유형화 하여 살펴보았다. 다음으로 불교 관련 속담과 속담의 영향관계에 대해 고찰하였다. 불교가 민중의 생활과 사고방식과 성정 등에 많은 영향을 주며 많은 불교 관련 속담을 생성해 내었듯, 역으로 민중들이 생성해 낸 속담 역시 불교에 적지 않은 영향을 주었을 것으로 불교 관련 속담과 불교는 상호 영향 관계에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 한국의 불교 관련 속담은 그 소재만 불교와 관련된 것에서 취하였을 뿐 불교라는 종교적 색채는 비교적 옅은 편으로, 속담은 불교와 직접 관련된 것을 말하기보다는 일상 속의 상황이나 인물을 비유하는 경우가 대부분이다. 반면, 중국의 불교 관련 속담은 일상 속의 상황이나 인물을 비유하는 속담도 있지만 불교와 직접적으로 관련된 내용을 담고 있는 속담이 많아 종교적 색채가 비교적 짙은 편이다. 한국은 언어와 문자의 괴리 문제로 인해 구비문학인 속담이 조선전기까지는 온전히 기록되어 보존될 수 없었다. 게다가 배불정책을 펼친 조선왕조라는 긴 터널을 지나는 동안 불교에 대해 우호적이거나 긍정적인 인식을 반영하고 있던 속담 대부분은 이미 변용되거나 소멸되어 버렸을 것이다. 그런 탓에 한국의 불교 관련 속담은 불교적 색채를 상당수 잃게 되었으며, 그로 인해 속담이 불교에 미친 영향은 그리 크지 않았을 것으로 보인다.
This study compares the perception of Buddha in Korean and Chinese proverbs and examines the relationship of influence between proverbs and Buddhism. First, this study looks into proverbs in Korea and China featuring Buddha by categorizing the positive and negative perception of Buddha, the public attitude toward Buddha. Buddhism-related proverbs in Korea tend to take up only subjects related to Buddhism with little reference to the religion, thus they do not directly address Buddhism but are likely to compare daily situations or persons in the context of Buddhism. On the other hand, Buddhism-related proverbs in China include proverbs that compare daily situations and person but also a greater number of proverbs that directly deal with Buddhism, which are not present in Korea, thus more religious in their content. It can be known that proverbs containing positive perception of Buddhism or ideas of Buddhism had an effect of naturally delivering to the public what religion is Buddhism and what is the idea behind it, while greatly contributing to the propagation of Buddhism in society. When viewed from this aspect, it is believed that Buddhism-related proverbs in China with more religious traits played that role more faithfully.
