Chinese Envoys’ Understandings on Joseon Examined through a Comparison between Dong Weol and Gong Yong-gyeong

이 글은 『조선왕조실록』 속에 묘사되어 있는 동월과 공용경의 비교를 동해 이들이지니고 있었던 조선 인식의 간극과 그 간극이 지니는 의미를 확인하고자 하는 것이지만,더 넓게는 이를 통해 당대 명나라 지식인들의 조선 인식 양상과 타자의 시선으로 바라본객관화․상대화된 조선의 모습을 확인하기 위한 단서를 제공하고자 하는 것이다. 동월과 공용경은 朝鮮을 찾았던 明나라의 使臣으로, 한림원 소속의 문인․관료였다는점과 귀국 후 조선 사행에 관한 저술을 남겼으며, 조선을 예의와 문화의 나라로 칭양하였다는 공통점을 가진다. 또, 이들의 사행 과정과 이들이 남긴 사행 기록물도 유사한 양상을보인다. 그런 점에서 이들의 조선 인식 역시 유사하다고 할 수 있지만, 이들의 조선 인식이 완벽하게 일치한다고 보기는 쉽지 않다. 『조선왕조실록』속에 기록되어 있는 동월과 공용경은 같으면서 다른 모습을 보이는데,동월보다 공용경의 평가에서 서술의 진폭이 훨씬 더 크다. 이 차이점을 당대 중국 지식인들이 지니고 있었던 조선 인식의 차이라거나 조선에 대한 평가의 相異함이라고 단언하기는 어렵지만, 최소한 이 차이는 이들 개인의 조선 인식에 일정한 간극이 존재한다는 것을보여주는 것이고, 이 간극에 대한 파악은 당대 중국 지식인들의 다양한 조선 인식을 보여주는 하나의 방법이 될 것이다. 이 글은 당대 중국 지식인들의 다양한 조선 인식을 살펴보는 하나의 방법을 제시하는 시도로 의미를 지닌다고 할 것이다.

The direct goal of this paper is to examine, through a comparison betweenDong Weol and Gong Yong-gyeong, gaps between their understandings onJoseon and the meanings of the gaps, but the wider goal is to provide cluesto examine the aspects of understandings on Joseon by literati of Mingdynasty of the time and the objectified and relative appearances of Joseonfrom the perspectives of others. Both Dong Weol and Gong Yong-gyeong in common were Ming dynasty’senvoys visiting Joseon, were literati-bureaucrats assigned to Hanrimweon(翰林院), wrote on their envoy trips to Joseon, and praised Joseon as a nationof manners and culture. Also, the processes of their envoy trips and theirwritings on them look similar to each other. In those senses it can be saidthat their understandings on Joseon are similar, but it does not mean thatthey are the same. The records of Dong Weol and those of Gong Yong-gyeong in Joseonwangjorilrok(『朝鮮王朝實錄』) look similar but different as Gong Yong-gyeonghas a broader amplitude than Dong Weol. Although it is hard to be confirmedthat the difference was the difference among understandings of Joseon byChinese literati of the time, the difference at least shows that there are gapsbetween those individuals’ understandings on Joseon; and the recognitionabout the gaps can be a method to show the various understandings on Joseonby Chinese literati of the time. This paper can have the meaning forsuggesting a way to examine the various understandings on Joseon byChinese literati of the time.
