The Filial Ethics and Ideological Orientation of the Hyoseonpyeon of Samgukyusa

『삼국유사』<효선편>에는 다섯 편의 孝行說話가 실려 있다. 설화 다섯 편을 지배하는구성 원리는 ‘孝善雙美의 미학을 추구하되 善에 더 역점 두기’이다. 이 구성 원리는 유교적 효와 불교적 선을 겸비한다는 의미로서, ‘효행-발복’ 구도로 표출된다. ‘효행-발복’구도는 효행을 하면 발복의 대상이 된다고 하며, 발복의 대상이 되기 위해서는 조건 없이효를 행하라고 압박한다. 한마디로 말해, ‘효행-발복’ 구도는 꽤나 이념적이다. ‘효행-발복’ 구도의 이념을 설화의 내용에 맞추어 정리해보면, ‘정성껏 효를 행하라! 언젠가 그대가 발복의 대상이 되리라!’가 된다.『삼국유사』<효선편>에 이념이 이입되면서 어떤 현상이 나타났는가? ‘발복’을 통해 하층인의 位相이 높아진 현상이 그 첫 번째이고, 이념으로인해 人間美를 상실한 현상이 그 두 번째이다. 둘은 각기 의의와 한계를 나타낸다. 즉,전자는 ‘효행-발복’ 구도의 이념이 가지는 의의이고 후자는 ‘효행-발복’ 구도의 이념이가지는 한계이다.

There are five tales of filial behavior in the Hyoseonpyeon of Samgukyusa. The dominant organizational principle of the five tales is to “pursue the aestheticsof Hyoseonssangmi with more emphasis on Seon.” The organizational principlesignifies the combination of Confucian filial duty and Buddhist Seon and ismanifested in the structure of “filial behavior-favorable change in fortune,”which states that one can see a favorable change in his or her fortune byperforming filial behavior and presses him or her to perform filial duty withoutany conditions to see such a change. In a word, the structure is veryideological. When considered according to the content of tales, the ideologystates “Perform filial duty with your utmost sincerity, and you will see afavorable change in your fortune someday!” What phenomena took place afterthe introduction of the ideology to the Hyoseonpyeon of Samgukyusa? First,the status of the lower class was raised through a “favorable change infortune.” Secondly, the ideology got rid of humanity. The two representsignificance and limitation, respectively. That is, the former represents thesignificance of “filial behavior-favorable change in fortune” ideology, whereasthe latter does the limitation of the ideology.
