이 글은 <화문록>의 서술방식과 주제의식의 관계를 살펴보는 데 목적을 두었다. 선행 연구를 바탕으로 하여 이 작품을 새롭게 바라본 결과 대략 세 가지 정도의 특징이 확인되었다. 첫째, <화문록>에서 유사한 이야기가 세 번 반복적으로 나타나는 서술방식의 특징이었다. 이러한 서술방식은 인물의 성격변화와 주제의식과 유기적으로 작용하고 있다. 이는 전대의 삼대록계 장편소설이 독립된 단위담을 반복하는 것과 질적인 면에서 차이가 있는 것이었다. 둘째, 세 명의 인물서사 중 두 명의 인물 서사는 전후 유기적인 관계망을 통해 전체적으로 화경의 인물 성격과 변화를 입체적으로 보여주기 위해 동원되고 있으며, 그 과정에서 감성적 애정을 조명하고 제가와 치국의 문제를 드러내고 있다는 점이다. 이는 ‘화경의 서사 → 양진의 서사 → 화경의 서사조명1 → 임금의 서사 → 화경의 서사조명2 → 임금의 서사 조명 → ①감성적 애정 조명 ②제가와 치국의 문제 조명’으로 정리할 수 있다. 셋째, 작가는 유사한 세 명의 인물 서사를 통해 제가와 치국이라는 집단적 가치와 애정의 긍정이라는 개인적 감성을 동시에 수용하고 있다. 그리고 그 과정에서 각각의 인물들의 시행착오와 수정을 통해 정신적 성장을 이끌어내고 있는 성장소설적 성격도 함께 나타난다. 이런 점에서 이 작품은 인물의 ‘사고’와 ‘경험’을 동시에 아우르는 통합적 사고의 중요성을 강조하는 작품이라 할 수 평가할 수 있다. 그리하여 최종적으로 이성 중심의 유교적 이념이 감성 중심의 개인적 가치와 서로 대치되지 않도록 귀결시키고 있는 작품이라고 보았다.

This study aims to examine the relationship between the method of description and the themes of <Hwamoonrok>. About three characteristics were verified as a result of reconsidering this work on the basis of the precedent researches. First, similar stories were described repeatedly in <Hwamoonrok>. This kind of method of description acts organically on the change of personality and the themes. It is different in quality unlike a full-length novel, <Samdae- rokgye> that repeat the independent unit story. Secondly, two of three personality descriptions were mobilized in order to show Hwakyeong’s personality and its change stereoscopically through the entire organic network of relation. Emotional affection was magnified and the problems of managing a household and ruling a nation were revealed in the process of it. This can be summarized as follows; Hwakyeong’s description -Yangjin’s description-The first shedding light on Hwakyeong’s description -King’s description-The second shedding light on Hwakyeong’s description -Shedding light on king’s description-Shedding light on emotional affection -Shedding light on the problems about managing a household and ruling a nation. Thirdly, the writer accepts both the group value of managing a household and ruling a nation and the personal sensibility of assuring affection at the same time. It has a characteristic of growth novel eliciting mental growth from the characters’ mistakes and corrections in the progress of it. In this regard, this work can be rated as one of works that emphasize on integrated thought dealing with character’s ‘thinking’ and ‘experiencing’ simultaneously. Therefore, this work has a conclusion that Confucian ideology centered on one’s reason is not in collision with the personal value centered on sensibility.
