보양이목설화의 서사층위는 두 가지이다. 서술층위와 인물층위가 그것이다. 서술층위에서는 ‘璃目’의 위상이 보양에 비해 낮고 인물층위에서는 ‘이목’의 위상이 보양과 대등하거나 오히려 높다. 인물층위를 파악하기 위해서는 인물 특히 ‘이목’을 주목해야 한다. 이목이 중심이 되는 사건은 네 가지이므로, 이 네 가지가 인물층위를 형성한다고 보면 된다. 인물층위에는 대칭적 세계관과 공동체 의식이 나타난다. 이목만이 지닌 특징이 인물층위를 지배하므로, 인물층위가 신화시대의 대칭적 세계관과 전설시대의 공동체 의식을 내장한다고 해도 좋을 것 같다. 인물층위의 자양분은 민간설화이다. 민간설화로는 세 가지 유형을 들 수 있는데, 보양이목설화는 이 중에서 전설시대의 의식이 담긴 보양이목설화 유형을 수용했으리라 본다. 보양이목설화의 인물층위는 보양이목설화 유형의 거울이다. 인물층위가 시대를 비추고 유형을 가늠하게 하며 화자의식을 되짚어보게 한다.
