本論では、遠藤周作の海と毒薬で罪意識と神との連関性を中心に考察した。まず、日本人の罪意識の有無を把握するために勝呂二郎と戸田剛を中心に調べてみた。その結果、勝呂は自分の運命に能動的に抵抗てきず、回りの状況に巻き込まれて行くが、生体解剖後は激烈な罪意識で苦しみながら、その罪意識は疲労感と無力感に現れる。しかし勝呂の罪意識は西欧のキリスト教の神が不在する限り、果ては風化してしまうことが確認できた。戸田は能動的に生体解剖に参加し、過去の窃盗、姦通など、人間ができるほぼすべての罪悪を犯しながらも良心の呵責を感じられない自分に恐ろしさを感じると言う。このように戸田は自分の罪意識欠如のことをよく凝視しているし、自分が犯した罪悪についても自覚していることが確認できた。遠藤は海と毒薬で海、おばはさん、米軍の捕虜の無力な死などを通じて、キリスト教の神の存在を提示している。それで勝呂、戸田らの罪意識と神の連関性を通じて神が不在している時の人間の悲惨さを気づかせて逆説的に神の必要性を認識させようとする意図が分かった。
