The present study examines hiatus resolution strategies in Tokyo Japanese from the perspective of morphological condition. It appears that two groups of resolving strategies apply complimentarily: glide epenthesis and diphthongization occur in stem internal V1V2 but asymmetric coalescence is blocked; only vowel coalescence, however, applies in V1V2 between some kinds of morpheme juncture (e.g., stem final + derivational or inflectional suffix). The selecting factor of two groups of strategy is a morphologically derived environment effect. The V1V2s in derived environment can be coalesced. However coalescence strategy is blocked in nonderived environment, but epenthesis and diphthongization applies instead for elimination of marked structure (i.e., onsetless syllable).
