聖徳太子の生涯を描いた絵伝は、四天王寺の壁にあったという絵伝をはじめ、中世になって数多く作られていた。多くの絵伝は『聖徳太子伝暦』を基礎にしたエピソードを年齢に従って配置していくという手法で作成されている。しかし、現存する絵伝および文字資料である伝記が相互に完全に一致する例はほとんど存在しない。ここで論ずる談山神社蔵(および観音正寺旧蔵)聖徳太子絵伝と、中世に展開していた増補系聖徳太子伝太子31歳条は他の伝記には見られない内容で、これが双方で一致している。他の部分が全て一致するわけではないが、増補系太子伝については従来絵画との関係についてはほとんど検討されてこなかっただけに、絵伝と伝記両者の成立や伝来の問題からも注目される。
After the Illustrated Biography on the wall of Shitennoji temple was made, manypaintigns which described a life of Shotoku Taishi were made in the medieval times. Much of them are created arranging the episodes according to his age. Such a styleis a form of “Shotoku Taishi Denryaku”. But there are few cases that the contentsof Illustrated Biographies correspond to that of the biographical stories. Tanzanshrine’s Illustrated Biography of Shotoku Taishi and enlarged biographical storieswhich were made in the medieval times have same episode in his age 31. Thisrelation may solve the problems about the time when they were made and the personwho made them.
