현영섭과 장혁주. 이 두 명은 각각 일본의 식민지 정책에 가담한 친일파의대표적 인물로서 인식되어 거의 동시기에 활약한 평론가와 문학자이다. 그러나동시기에 평론가, 문학자로서 활약했다고는 해도 그들 자신은 당시 전혀 접점을가지지 않았다. 그러한 그들을 왜 여기서 함께 논하려고 생각했는가. 그것은, 각각 좌익사상을 출발점으로서 활동을 시작했음에도 불구하고, 결과적으로 “내선일체화”라고 하는 체제 협력으로 도달하는 과정이 매우 비슷하다고 생각했기때문에이다. 즉, 그들의 사상적 갈등, 비판자와 그 비판에 대한 대응, 이해자협력자와의 만남, 발언의 우익화화·과격화에의 계기 등이다. 그들 이른바 친일파에 대하여 오랫동안 ""내선일체화", "황국 신민화"의 철면피한 추진자", “일본 제국주의의 침략전쟁 수행에, 직접 거들었다는" 등 후세대로 부터의 평가가 뿌리 깊다. 근래에는 현영섭과 장혁주에 대한 연구를 시작하면서 “내선일체화"에 대해서 가장 협력적이었던 두 사람의 체제 협력에 이르기까지의 문제를 생각하며, 종래의 체제 협력에 추종했다라고 하는 그들의 발언의진심을 고찰하고자 한다. 즉, "그들을 다른 사람화하는 것도 아니고, 당시의 동시대적 문맥에 서서, 그들이 내선일체에 개입하게 된 논리를 분명히 할" 필요가있을것이다. 또, 사상 전향을 해, 결과적으로 전쟁 협력으로 향해 간 많은 지식인이 빠져 간 함정, 즉 "당시 많은 조선의 지식인이나 문학자들이 직면하고 있던, 식민지 조선의 위기적 상황의 리얼리티"를 현영섭과 장혁주라고 하는 두 명의평론가 작가를 보는 것으로 접해 가고 싶다.
