가부키(歌舞伎)에 있어서 개는 흔히 수상한 사람의 침입이나, 쓸쓸함을 표현하기 위해서 사용되는 소도구이다. 한편 근세 후기 가부키 작가를 대표하는 4세쓰루야 난보쿠(鶴屋南北)는 이와 같은 개의 이미지를 이용하면서도 유머러스한장면의 연출이나 극 전개를 위한 복선을 깔기 위해서 개를 이용하고 있다. 그리고 난보쿠는 배우들을 퇴장시켜 장면을 전환시킬 때도 개를 사용하고 있는데,이는 장면의 전환에 개를 이용한 유머러스한 장면을 삽입함으로써, 불필요한배우를 정리하면서 동시에 무대 위의 분위기를 바꾸려는 의도라 할 수 있다. 또한 난보쿠는 때때로 돈이나 가보와 같이 극중 갈등의 중심이 되는 소도구의이동에 개를 이용함으로써 간단하게 스토리를 진행시키고 있다. 개는 사람과 친밀하고 서민적인 동물이기 때문에 기제와(生世話) 가부키에사용되기 쉬운 소도구 중의 하나였다. 그리고 나뭇가지나 돈과 같은 다른 소도구와는 달리, 배우가 인형을 쓰고 작가의 지시대로 움직인다는 점에 있어서도특별하다고 할 수 있다. 난보쿠 작품에 있어서 개는 수상한 사람의 침입이나,쓸쓸함 등 무대 위의 분위기를 만드는 것은 물론, 배우들을 퇴장시키거나 다른도구를 운반하는 등, 배우에 준하는 역할을 담당하고 있다. 배우들의 개성이작품의 구성을 좌우하는 가부키에 있어서, 특별한 개성이 없는 개는 작가의 생각대로 움직이는 얼굴 없는 배우를 의미한다. 난보쿠는 개의 이용을 통해 무대위에 자신을 적극적으로 드러내려 했던 것은 아닐까 생각된다.
In Kabuki, dogs are often used as props in some scenes to express the lonelinessor the urgency in the intrusion of the thief. On the other hand, Tsuruya NanbokuIV, one of the most representative Kabuki authors in the late modern period, useda dog in a different way such as an advance hint or to create a humorous scene. For example, Nanboku used a dog in the changing scene when actors exeunt. Thisis because the humorous situation with a dog can bridge scenes with a differentatmosphere. Moreover, Nanboku sometimes used a dog to carry other props suchas money in need and hence efficiently proceed story lines. Dogs have been one of the main props easily used in Kizewa Kabuki becausethey are animals intimate with humans. Specifically, it can be said that dogs arespecial props compared to other props such as a branch and money due to the factthat they are played by actors wearing a dog costume. Dogs, therefore, perform likean actor on the stage as the author intends them to. Dogs in the playbooks of TuruyaNanboku, not only make the atmosphere on the stage, but also act like an actorso that they make funny scenes and carry other props. The story of Kabuki heavilydepends on the personality of the actors and hence this sometimes limits author’sintention. In contrast, it means that utilizing a dog in Kabuki let the author be freefrom this limitation.
